Alessio Lisci: "We leave with the feeling that we deserve more on the road, especially penalties"

Osasuna coach Alessio Lisci spoke to the media in the press room following Villarreal’s match against Osasuna.

Osasuna head coach Alessio Lisci addressed the game in a press conference, saying, “We leave again with the feeling that we deserve more on the road. Above all, we deserve favorable penalties. Today, [forward] Raúl [García] had a clear penalty that wasn’t called and the VAR didn’t intervene. Against Espanyol, [forward] Víctor [Muñoz] had a clear penalty that wasn’t called, and again the VAR didn’t intervene. Let me be clear: I don’t think these decisions are made intentionally to harm Osasuna, just as I don’t think they are made intentionally to benefit Espanyol or Villarreal. That’s very clear. But these are two objectively clear penalties, and they should be called. We’ve had one called before, but if there are two, both should be called. These situations hurt us because both happened with the score tied. I always trust that luck will turn and that in upcoming games we’ll get more favorable decisions. I understand that VAR intervenes less—like in the Champions League or Europa League—but when it’s clear, VAR has to step in. In these two situations, from my perspective, it should have.”

Lisci also praised his team’s performance. “The team played very well. Up until the sending-off, we were doing things well; they struggled to take the ball from us, and we had an obvious chance with Víctor. The match was balanced and competitive. Even with ten men, given the circumstances, playing against Villarreal is very difficult. We suffered a bit at the start, but later we took control of the game. Against Villarreal, they can score out of nowhere because they are a very high-level team—that’s just the way it is,” he said.
